Miners Success Draws National Attention

2010-02-04

Lucas Trombetta is the Pikes Peak Miners AAA program director and 16U coach. After the Miners 16UAAA team finished the NAPHL regular season in first place overall, Brian McDonough, the North American Hockey League's Director of Communications, asked coach Trombetta the following questions:

What does it mean for the Pikes Peak Miners program to be regular season champs in the NAPHL?

It means a lot to the Miners program for our 16's to be the first ever NAPHL regular season champs.  We didn't expect it at the beginning of the season, and nobody expects to go 17-2-1 over 20 games, but after the Rochester event it became apparent that we were one of the 4 teams who had a shot.  Fortunately, we were able to string together 5 good hockey games in Ann Arbor to finish on top.

What are your thoughts/expectations heading into the NAPHL playoffs in San Jose?

We have a tough schedule in San Jose.  We play all 3 Michigan teams in pool play, and they have been difficult for us to play against all season long.  At this time of the season, every team will be

playing their best hockey and the playoff championship is really up for grabs.  I would like our team to at least make the semi-final round so we have a shot at the championship.

You hit on it earlier in the season, but now after 4 events, what are your thoughts on the NAPHL, the competition, exposure for your players, and your organization?

The NAPHL competition has been really good all season long.  The brand of hockey being played by most teams has really improved over the 4 events as well.  Regarding exposure for our players, the NAPHL has surpassed expectations.  We've had 4 of our Major players sign NAHL tenders already, and at each event we've had scouts from various Jr. A leagues and colleges at our games.   The NAPHL provides a nice structure and an excellent stage for each organization to showcase their players.  The events have been very well run, very well marketed, and our players are benefiting tremendously from playing in the environment the NAPHL has created.

Anything else you want to hit on to highlight your program/the NAPHL?

In addition to our 16's finishing the regular season in first place, equally important for the Miners program is that our 18's finished 4th overall as well.  Having 2 teams in two age groups competing at a high level and being at or near the top of the NAPHL standings means our program has been consistent with our mission to help players maximize their potential from the time they begin with the Miners as Bantams and exit as seasoned Midget Major players.

The Miners will be announcing their Spring and Summer programs in the next few weeks on their website:  www.pikespeakminers.com
